Digital Art Course Overview
A) Course Description
This course introduces the computer as a medium for creating original artwork. Students will learn the fundamentals of art and design and apply these concepts to visually communicate ideas. Using industry standard programs including Adobe Photoshop CC and Illustrator CC, students will study the tools and techniques of image creation and manipulation. This will culminate with an online portfolio of the student’s artwork at the end of the semester. In addition, students will also be taught to examine, discuss, and critique not only their own work, but also the work of others both orally and in writing.

C) Lab Donation:
Due to the high cost of ink and good quality printing papers, the art department is asking for a lab donation of $5.00. Students who donate will have two of their best works printed at the end of the term.
D) Classroom Expectations:
· Above all, be KIND!!
· Be productive, and participate in class
· Be on-time and ready to work when the bell rings
· Have your binder and supplies with you every day
· No food or drink
· No cell phones
E) Computer Use Expectations:
Students will not attempt to:
· Make adjustments to the hardware or any setting on the monitor
· Download music, games, or anything not related to class assignments
· Use class computers to check email, play games, listen to music, or access Internet sites not
related to the current assignment
F) Behavior Policy:
Failure to comply with the expectations of the class may result in the following consequences and while they are listed with an order, depending on the offense they may be any of the following:
· 1st Offense: Verbal warning.
· 2nd Offense: Change of seat and/or lunch detention.
· 3rd Offense: Phone call home and/or lunch detention
· 4th Offense: Phone call home and a referral will be written
· 5th Offense: The 5th offense and subsequent offenses are determined by that particular offense and may result in the following: referral, Saturday School, meeting with parents/counselor, removal from class with a grade of F/U.
G) Grading:
1) Academic Grades
Students are graded on several different types of assignments. Each will be given a letter grade and corresponding number of points. Weighted assignment categories are as follows:
a) Digital Competency Projects (40%)
b) Digital Practice Exercises (30%)
c) Written Classwork (15%)
d) Quizzes (15%)
Please note: Students who do not complete or pass a Digital Competency Project will not pass the course.
This course satisfies the A through G requirements for UC and CSU colleges. Therefore, no D grades will be offered. The grading scale is as follows:
A 100-90%
B 89-80%
C 79-70%
F 69% and below
2) Effort Grades (Citizenship)
Students will receive a grade that will evaluate their effort. This includes timeliness, productivity, tutorial and classroom attendance, participation, preparation and organization.
3) Behavior Grades (Conduct)
Students will also receive a grade that will evaluate their behavior. This includes being polite, helpful, respectful, using appropriate language, and general positive social behavior.
Students will receive one of the following letters to determine their effort and behavior grades:
O-Outstanding
S-Satisfactory
N-Needs Improvement
U-Unsatisfactory

Semester Final: Online Portfolio on Google Sites
Each unit will be comprised of the following:
I) Late Work/Re-Grades
· All late projects and written reflections will drop one full letter grade.
· Late work will be accepted until the end of each quarter.
· Projects may be revised and resubmitted for a better grade. In order to have a project re-graded,
you must make an appointment with the teacher for a conference outside of class time and you
must bring your original grading sheet.
J) Tutorials/Student Support
· Tutorial for this class is offered Monday/Wednesday afternoons from 2:49pm-3:35pm
· Open Lab Hours are Tuesday/Thursday afternoons from 2:49pm-3:35pm and lunch everyday
· Students with an upper grade tutorial, free period or excel period may use room 1170 to work
with permission from both teachers
· Grades are updated online weekly
**If you are absent or know you will be absent for a period of time, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to communicate with the teacher and/or another student to make up the missed work**

- 5-tab dividers
Recommended:
- Flash Drive for storing and transferring files.
- Digital Camera
- Free 7-day download of Adobe Illustrator (Quarter 3) Adobe Photoshop, (Quarter 4) on your home computer
- Gravit and Photopea accounts: If you want to work from home (however you will need to learn the differences on your own.
